QuotedData’s morning briefing 16 May 2025 – AWEM, GRP, NESF

In QuotedData’s morning briefing 16 May 2025:

  • Ashoka WhiteOak Emerging Markets Trust (AWEM) posted a fall in NAV of 2.3% over April 2025, amid the US-led global trade war. It underperformed its benchmark (the MSCI Emerging Market Index), which was down 2.1%, but outperformed other global indices like US equities (S&P 500) and MSCI World which returned -4.0% and -2.4% respectively. Unsurprisingly, the largest detractor was Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which accounted for a -11.0% in NAV. Other detractors included OneSource (-9.2%, leading CDMO service provider from India) and E Ink Holdings (-16.0%, a Taiwan based company with a dominant, near-monopoly position in the electronic paper industry). The key contributors include Benefit Systems (+12.5%, largest provider of employee well-being services in Poland), MercadoLibre (+15.5%, largest e-commerce market place in Latam), and Diagnostyka (+13.3%, largest private provider of laboratory diagnostic services in Poland).
  • Greencoat Renewables (GRP) passed its continuation vote at its AGM yesterday, although 17.46% of shareholders that voted (or 11.83% of all shareholders) voted in favour of discontinuing the company.
  • NextEnergy Solar Fund’s (NESF’s) chair Helen Mahy has stepped down “to pursue other interests”. The board has appointed Paul Le Page, previously senior independent director, as interim chairman while the company looks for a permanent successor. Le Page has 12 years of solar industry sector experience and was the audit committee chair for Bluefield Solar Income Fund for 10 years before he joined NESF in 2023.
