‘Mergers should gather momentum’: The outlook for investment trusts in 2022

Matthew Read, senior analyst, QuotedData:

“Many of the themes that we have seen in 2021 will roll into 2022, with Covid still at the fore, but likely to ease. If the recent uptick in inflation is more than transitory, expect to see funds exposed to real assets, particularly with inflation linked income (renewable energy, infrastructure, property – particularly logistics) to be strongly in demand. Expect to see growth in both the renewables and the associated infrastructure funds as we push for net zero carbon, with uranium also a beneficiary. ESG will remain a theme, but less of a differentiator and more universal. We may see more welcome consolidation in UK equity income, although the pace of this is slow, and there’s room for a further recovery in value and a re-rating of biotech which has suffered of late.”
