The UK fund managers who love foreign shares

It has been a good year so far for UK equity fund managers, with the FTSE 100 surging and plenty of portfolios making hay..

But it’s worth noting that some of the best-performing UK equity funds also invest liberally in overseas shares..

Temple Bar leads the pack

Temple Bar (TMPL) has cropped up often in our funds coverage lately thanks to its stellar performance in recent years..

But the trust has around a quarter of its portfolio in overseas shares. The last disclosure of its full portfolio, which was provided alongside the trust’s results for 2024, gives a flavour of what the team has backed..

Asked about the overseas exposure in an interview with QuotedData in August, Ian Lance, one of the trust’s investment managers, said looking abroad “widens your opportunity set”.

He noted, for example, that while the team regarded some parts of the UK market, such as financials and retailers as very cheap, these segments are “still quite narrow”.

Lance claimed that some sectors are simply not well represented in the UK, such as tech, and argued that using overseas shares helped to lower stock-specific risk.
