  • Crystal Amber (CRS), the activist UK smaller companies trust, reported interim results to 31 December 2019. It was a difficult period for CRS, with its NAV (adjusted for dividends) falling by 26.4% over the period, compared to a 10.7% increase in the Numis Small Cap Index. CRS said that activist investing requires a focused portfolio, which inevitably increases concentration risk. The company added that during the period under review, many UK domestically focussed businesses suffered from Brexit related uncertainties. This also adversely affected the appetite of potential corporate acquirers.
  • AVI Japan Opportunity (AJOT) announced an initial placing, offer for subscription and intermediaries offer for a target issue of up to 30m ordinary shares, as well as a placing programme of up to 85m ordinary shares and/or C shares (less the number of ordinary shares issued under the initial issue). AJOT is targeting gross proceeds of up to approximately £30m from the initial issue.
