Henderson Smaller Companies’ Neil Hermon to retire at the end of September

Henderson Smaller Companies (HSL) has announced that Neil Hermon, co-manager of its portfolio, is retiring from Janus Henderson Investors and the asset management industry on 30 September 2025. Neil’s retirement comes after 22 years as fund manager of HSL, and over 36 years in financial services. Indriatti van Hien, Neil’s co-manager on HSL, will continue to manage the portfolio according to its fundamental ethos, as she and Neil have successfully done for the past 9 years.

Having joined Janus Henderson as a UK Equities analyst in 2011, Indriatti was appointed deputy fund-manager on HSL in 2016 and then co-fund manager in January 2025. Indriatti also manages the Janus Henderson UK Smaller Companies Fund and Janus Henderson UK Alpha Fund. HSL says that Indriatti will continue to be supported by Janus Henderson’s “well-resourced” UK equities team, including Shivam Sedani who has worked closely with both Neil and Indriatti since joining Janus Henderson in 2017.

HSL adds that Neil will remain in his current role until his retirement, working closely with Indriatti and the team to ensure a smooth transition and handover of responsibilities. There will be no change to HSL’s investment objective or strategy as a result of Neil’s upcoming retirement.

Comments from Penny Freer, HSL’s chair

“Neil has made an outstanding contribution to the Company in his long tenure as Fund Manager, for which the Board is extremely grateful. Having worked closely with Indriatti for the last 9 years, the Board has every confidence that her significant experience and proven expertise will continue to be a huge asset to the Company following Neil’s retirement.”

[QD comment: Neil Hermon is a well-known and well-regarded manager UK small cap equity space, who, after 22 years at the helm, has become synonymous with Henderson Smaller Companies. We wish him well in his retirement.]
