FT Global Food Systems

Description

With 8.5 billion people to feed by 2030, the big challenge for the global agriculture and food industry is how to deliver a secure and safe food supply that doesn’t destroy the environment in the process.

Looked at through the lens of changing consumer expectations, and taking place in the lengthening shadow of climate change, our flagship and high level Global Food Systems conference sets out to uncover how stakeholders are working together to drive more innovation and sustainability into food production and consumption processes.
We will showcase the work of life science companies, pioneering retailers, manufacturers, food processing companies,  farmers, agribusiness leaders and technologists that are challenging orthodox thinking about our complex – and increasingly vulnerable – food systems with their sustainable, collaborative and high-impact solutions.

Speakers

José Graziano da Silva

José Graziano da Silva has worked on food security, rural development, and agriculture issues for over 30 years, most notably as the architect of Brazil’s Zero Hunger (Fome Zero) programme and now as the Director-General of FAO.

Graziano da Silva led the team that designed the Zero Hunger programme, and, in 2003, was charged by then-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to implement the programme as Special Minister of Food Security and the Fight against Hunger.

He headed the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean from 2006 to 2011. Elected Director-General of FAO, he took up office on 1 January 2012. After his first term from 1 January 2012 to 31 July 2015, Graziano da Silva was re-elected for a second 4 year-term (1 August 2015 to 31 July 2019) with the votes of 177 countries during FAO's 39th Conference.

At the helm of FAO, Graziano da Silva has sharpened the Organization’s strategic focus; and is strengthening its field presence. He is also working to instil a best value-for-money culture. At the international level, he is working to build consensus on food security-related issues.

He has also encouraged closer cooperation with development partners, supports South-South cooperation, and has increased collaboration with civil society and private sector entities, including farmer organizations and cooperatives for smallholder producers.

Graziano da Silva holds a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy and a Master's Degree in Rural Economics and Sociology from the University of São Paulo (USP), and a Ph.D. in Economic Sciences from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). He also has post-Doctorate Degrees in Latin American Studies (University College of London) and Environmental Studies (University of California, Santa Cruz).

A Brazilian and Italian by nationality, he is married to Paola Ligasacchi and has two children and four grandchildren.

To save her amputated leg from constant infection Heather had to go on a plant-based diet. Because of this Heather created the pioneering plant based multi-award winning ethical international Vegan food company, VBites, which now exports to 24 countries, has over 104 plant-based products in its range and has won an incredible 80 awards.

Heather not only owns 4 purely plant-based manufacturing factories, but is also the owner of VBites Ventures, a company which invests in brilliant plant-business concepts, helping entrepreneurs with plant-based ideas and vision to transform those ideas into fully-fledged businesses.

As well as being an entrepreneur, renowned public and motivational speaker, she has worked tirelessly to aid survivors of war and landmine explosions. She has helped raise funds of 18m to clear over 21million sq meters of mine filled land and assisted in excess of 400,000 amputees.

Mobile technology has placed power literally in the palm of the consumer’s hand. As data about where our food comes from proliferates and access to it gets easier, a new breed of conscious and healthy-living consumer is on the rise. Consumers want more transparency, more sustainability, more fairness, more healthy alternatives, and fewer chemical and artificial inputs in the food systems that feed them. They will – and do – take high-impact action if they don’t get what they want. How are private sector companies and other stakeholders working together to re-align our global food systems in response?
