Wolf’s UK tungsten mine produces first concentrate

Wolf Minerals has produced the first tungsten concentrates at its new Drakelands open pit mine at the Hemerdon project, in Devon. The concentrates will be sent to Global Tungsten and Powders, in the USA, and Wolfram Bergbau und Hütten, in Austria in terms of Wolf’s offtake agreement.

Although this is a major milestone in the development of the mine, the processing plant has yet to be fully commissioned for commercial production. After some teething problems in August (not uncommon in a new plant) the company expects commissioning to be completed by the end of September. The official opening of the mine is on 17th September.

The company will continue to ramp up the plant to full production by early 2016 and once in full production the mine will produce 3,000 t/y of concentrates and be one of the world’s largest tungsten producers outside of China.
