Sirius selects contractors for major project components

Sirius Minerals Plc has selected the preferred contractors for key components of its North Yorkshire polyhalite project after a 19-month tendering process.

Sirius has chosen AMC UK (a joint venture between Thyssen Group and Redpath Group) as the contractor for the design and build of mine site development, which includes all of the shaft construction and the shaft construction of the mineral transport system (MTS).

For the development of the MTS, Sirius has chosen a joint venture between Hochtief (UK) Construction Limited and J. Murphy & Sons Limited. The MTS scope of work is currently for the design and build of the MTS tunnel to link the mine with the materials handling facility at Teesside.

The mine site development and the MTS are the two major components of the capital estimate, comprising US$2.3 billion of the total Stage 1 cost of US$3.6 billion, as detailed in its March 2016 definitive feasibility study.

As a result of securing the contractors and fixing the price, Sirius will update the capital costs of Stage 1, with the expectation that the total cost can be reduced.
