Round Hill spending spree continues

Round Hill spending spree continues – Round Hill Music has announced a couple of new investments – making it three in three days.

The Richardsons

The fund has bought 100% of a catalogue of 308 tracks from the Richardsons, Jack and his son Garth, made up of producer royalties and neighbouring rights income. Garth Richardson is a Canadian record producer and music engineer. He is the son of music producer Jack Richardson CM, who has been described as a pioneer of the music recording industry in the 1960s and 1970s.

The catalogue includes the #1 songs “Send the Pain Below” (Chevelle), “Killing in the Name” (Rage Against the Machine), “Night Moves” (Bob Seger), “Swing Life Away” (Rise Against) and “Headstrong” (Trapt)

Artists in the catalogue include Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Rage Against The Machine, Chevelle, Nickelback, Rise Against, Trapt and Mudvayne

Garth Richardson has on one occasion won Canada’s Juno Award for Producer of the Year and been nominated twice more for that award and for a Grammy Award

The Junos honoured Jack by naming him the recipient of the “Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award” in 1986, based on his significant contribution to the Canadian music industry and by re-naming the “Producer of the Year” award to the “Jack Richardson Producer of the Year” award in 2003.  Jack’s influence in the music industry was also recognized by inducting him as a member of the Order of Canada

The catalogue has significant exposure to Streaming, comprising 72% of revenue mix, with the balance being comprised of 6% Physical, 5% Download, 4% Sync, 10% Other, and 3% Sound Exchange.

The top five songs ranked by revenue are: “The Red” (Chevelle), “Send the Pain Below” (Chevelle), “Killing in the Name” (Rage Against the Machine), “Swing Life” (Rise Against) and “Headstrong” (Trapt).

Rebelution

The other purchase announced today was of the master recordings and music publishing assets from American reggae band Rebelution. That catalogue includes ownership of the master recordings from Rebelution’s entire career, including rights owner’s share of neighbouring rights, and also includes Rebelution’s music publishing assets.

The portfolio hadn’t had much exposure to reggae ahead of this. Part of the attraction is that the band tours a lot, playing large venues across America, helping propel future catalogue revenues.

The acquisition is shared equally with Round Hill’s private Fund III.

Founded in Isla Vista, CaliforniaUS reggae band Rebelution has achieved remarkable success within its genre since the release of its 2007 debut albumCourage To Grow. In 2009, the band topped the Billboard Reggae Album Chart for the first of what would be five consecutive #1 Billboard reggae records; in 2014, they boasted the highest-selling reggae album release of the year and in 2016, they garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. Rebelution has had sell-out headline shows from Red Rocks, Colorado to The Greek Theatre, California along with festival slots at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, ACL, Glastonbury and more. The band has independently sold over half a million albums to date.

The catalogue has diversified revenue exposures including, on the master side, streaming, comprising 73% of revenue mix, with the balance being comprised of 18% publishing, 6% neighbouring rights and 3% other. In terms of geographical exposure, 90% of the revenue is from the US, while the balance is from other countries.
