Aquila European says Norwegian ‘Rock’ wind farm still going ahead – On October 11 2021, the Norwegian supreme court ruled that two windfarms – Storheia and Roan – had violated the traditional reindeer herding rights of the local Sami people. The herders said that the operational wind farms were disturbing the reindeer and affecting their grazing. They want the 151 wind turbines associated with these projects removed.
The wind farms form part of the wider Fosen wind park development. Aquila European Renewables Income is invested in the Rock project which does not form part of this development. [the 400-MW Rock wind farm is being built in Mosjoen, Nordland county – see this Guardian story]
Aquila says “The Investment Adviser recognises that there are important factual differences between the Fosen and The Rock cases. Most importantly, the Fosen wind farm cluster is built on a winter grazing area whereas The Rock is built on one of the existing migration routes. The Fosen case also illustrates the importance of the Supreme Court’s consideration of facts and evidence, which it is too early to evaluate to the full extent at the present stage of the case. It is noted that the Supreme Court opined on two specific wind farms and in the context of their respective locations and not in a general matter about wind farms in Norway.
The Investment Adviser recognises recent progress with The Rock and based on external legal advice, has no indication that the Fosen procedures will have any direct consequences for The Rock. In the meantime, Eolus, the developer, continues with construction on site of the Project.”

Thanks Anders, we weren’t aware of this – FYI for readers – the wind farm in the Guardian article looks to us to be the same project as the Rock wind farm referred to above. I have updated the story.
